My arrival in the U.K. Sept. 2

Monday September 2,  2019

Oh dear.  This car.  It's a small Hyundai which is good.  I knew I'd have to drive on the left, stearing on the left and shift a standard with my left hand---5 speeds.  That took a little getting used to.  I mean the first 4 times I got out of the car and went to get back in, I automatically went to get in on the left side.
Getting out of Manchester was crazy.  Once I reached Wales on the West coast, the roads got narrower and less traveled.
I think all of Wales is made up of stone.  Stone walls and beautiful ones at that, on both sides of the road; some covered with trimmed hedges.  These trimmed hedges scrapped my car more than once due to the narrowness of the road and the super fast drivers coming at me on my right.
I hesitated looking at the car once I stopped but after seeing the scratches from the front to the back and my left side mirror pushed against the side, I really looked forward to getting to my first destination in Harlech, Wales.  I think I can get the scratches out.  Wish I had some compound.  And that's just after driving the first few hours.
I only got lost about 6 times.  I ended up getting off at exit #19 3 times after circling around and trying again until I got it right.  It's those roundabouts! I needed to take the 4th exit after entering the roundabout but there were other roads mixed in too.  I never got flustered.  The little towns I discovered off the highway were well worth a bit more driving.
It seems all the houses everywhere are made of either stone or brick.  Even some of the animal barns were stone.
And SHEEP.  So lovely and so many.....everywhere.  I only saw 1 brown.  The rest were white.  And they are dotted all on the landscape of very green grass.  Beautiful.
I stopped at a cafe' that is getting completely renovated into a B&B and took a picture of her (Carrie) lovely menu.  I had a baked potato with goat cheese and pesto and learned all about the area with its' stream running between 2 mountains just outside her door.
The skies were a beautiful blue with a few wispy white clouds mixed in until I finally reached my first stopover on the ocean in Harlech when it started to rain and be quite windy.
So here I sit in a sun room, on the ocean wishing I could stay longer.
It seems Sheila the owner of this B&B loves to cook.  We talked food for the first hour I was here.  Sheila just gave a "hen party" where she cooked and catered for a group of drinking ladies.  She also hosts small dinner parties that keep her busy in the off season.  I am the only guest here tonight so she said she will make me whatever I want for breakfast in the morning.

Tomorrow if it's not raining too bad,  I will take the 20 steps or so over the hill on the lawn and onto the beach and down the beach a bit to visit an extremely old 500AD church all lit with candles before I get on the road to my next destination in Cardigan, Wales.
So ROCKS and SHEEP.  The 2 words of the day.
I love Wales!!

  1. it sounds idyllic except for the scratches and getting lost. Marcy can relate to the narrow roads.
