LONDON
Monday Sept. 23rd 2019
After spending 3 days in Hastings on the coast with a friend I lived with in France 5 years ago, I took the train to London.
The weather today was the same as it was when I came for a day last week....rainy and gray. Everything is gray when the sun isn't out.
The hotel I booked in Kensington was more beautiful than anything else on the street. The outside was full of red, orange and yellow flowers and looked very fancy and regal. And so did the lobby. The room was by far the smallest room I have ever stayed in. It had a twin bed! And barely enough floor room for my suitcase. So I went to the bar, had a double Tia Maria and then went out to discover Kensington Gardens across the street. When I mentioned to people here that I wanted to visit Kensington Gardens they looked at me with an expressionless face with no comment. I pictured lovely gardens with flowers and GARDENS! It was merely a large park for walkers, runners and some designated roadways for cyclists. There were NO flowers and NO gardens. The front of Kensington Palace had a lot of reconstruction going on with scaffolding and cranes and boarded up windows. It was late in the day so could not enter to the public visiting area. I will probably return tomorrow and maybe get in the queue for the afternoon tea there. I think that's what I'm supposed to do.
The pond across the way from the Palace, Round Pond, was a place I'd return to. The pond had countless white swans, Canadian geese and ducks. But the swans were the best. And they let you come right up to them. There were no signs saying to not get too close or not to feed them.. There was a sign that said to respect the wildlife and if you are to feed them to do it wisely. No cooked food except for legumes and grains and no junk food. Very peaceful place to come to get away from the crazy streets. The mix of cultures is in a probable close resemblance to N.Y.. A LOT of Middle Easterners.
I SAW MY FIRST RAT!
As soon as I turned into Kensington Gardens, there he was. A real rat. I only saw one and several squirrels. He was afraid of me and ran when he saw me.
Tomorrow I will try to have a plan as to where I will go. Some decisions will depend on the weather. If it's rainy I might try to figure out the TUBE (subway) system. I'd like to take a boat ride on the Thames but not if it's raining.
